2018 was the 10th anniversary of the Times Square Valentine Heart Design Competition. The annual event is sponsored by Times Square Arts and curated by the Design Trust for Public Space.

Architecture and design firms are invited to submit proposals for a public art installation celebrating Love in Times Square in February.

The winner gets to display their creation right in the heart of Times Square, one of the planet’s most Instagrammed places.

The 2018 winner of the Times Square Valentine Heart Design was “Window to the Heart“, designed by:

ArandaLasch + Marcelo Coelho with Formlabs
Structural Engineer: Laufs Engineering Design – LED

The stunning installation was unveiled February 1st and was shown throughout the entire month. View it here on the Times Square Arts website

About the 2018 winning display:

Window to the Heart placed the world’s largest lens in the center of Times Square.

The 12 foot in diameter Fresnel lens was designed with 3D-printing manufacturer Formlabs to distort and capture the image of Times Square. The lens, made from a 3D printer, optically blends light and brings attention to the heart-shaped window at its center.

Visitors can look through the window or photograph themselves within it, completing the loop between the lens of the eye and the lens of the camera.

This years’ theme and winner

The chosen theme “explores how love emerges within communities where difference meets equality.” It is sure to be amazing!

You can get a preview of this year’s winner on the Times Square Arts website here, entitled “X”. According to the design firm Reddymade, The X stands for a kiss as well as a crossroads. It looks to be a fantastic installation!

About the vows ceremony

The vow renewal ceremony takes place at Duffy Square on Times Square’s red steps, between 46th and 47th Streets on the Broadway Pedestrian Plaza.
