Artist Room Project Washington Square Hotel

Announcing The Artist Room Project at the Washington Square Hotel

We’ve always been fans of the arts.

Did you know that one of our owners is a talented painter? Mrs. Paul is responsible for the beautiful artwork dotting the walls of the hotel.

So to honor the spirit of creativity that’s resided here and frankly, the entire Village, we’ve put together an Artist In Residence event called The Artist Room Project that we’re extremely excited to tell you about!

The hotel itself is the inspiration

This upcoming Valentine’s Day weekend in conjunction with our friends at Operation:CMYK, we’ll be hosting an artist that will create a personalized experience–or work–that uses the hotel as an inspiration. The outcome will be something that can be shared both in person as well as digitally.

The Artist in Residence will be Rudy Francisco, a renowned spoken-word poet. The event will be known as The Artist Room Project and will focus on Love. (What a nice way to start the year!)

Rudy will be staying at the hotel from February 2nd to the 14th and will transform a room into an intimate performance space inspired by his surroundings on Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th. Those who wish to attend should register online. (Don’t worry. It’s free, but you need to register.)

Meet the artist

Upon arriving and checking in at the hotel, you can hang out in the lobby bar and enjoy complimentary snacks, music and chat with fellow art-loving attendees. Then you will be led to Rudy’s Artist Room for an up-close and personal interaction and performance by the artist. After the performance, you’ll be escorted back to the lobby bar to discuss your experience and/or enjoy the snacks and beverages for purchase.

A little bit of info on Rudy.

He uses personal narratives to discuss the politics of love, race, class, gender, religion and interconnected nature of human existence and has shared stages with prominent artists such as Gladys Knight, Jordin Sparks, Musiq Soul Child, and Jill Scott.

He is also the co-host of the largest poetry venue in San Diego, competes in domestic and international poetry slam competitions and had the honor of being nominated for an NAACP Image Award.

Rudy is the 2009 National Underground Poetry Slam Champion, 2010 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion and appeared on TV One’s Verses and Flow. Looks like he’s kinda good at what he does. Oh–and he actively seeks young poets to encourage and cultivate, so he’s a nice guy, too.

Again, we are over the moon about this and can’t figure out why we didn’t think of it before! Please try and join us next week, and keep checking back on our blog for upcoming events.

Register here to attend

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
