Look Ma, No Hands!

Sometimes we feel like New York City has a festival for just about everything. And you know what? We’re right! This Thursday through Sunday (August 31st through Septemeber 3rd), get ready for the 8th Annual NYC Unicycle Festival!

The organizers describe it as, “Four days of one wheel madness.” There will be long distance rides, public shows, and lessons for all ages. Sporty types will try their hand at unicycle hockey, basketball, and sumo. (What???)

The crowd will be a mix of pros, recreational riders, and newbies, so don’t be shy to join in on the fun even if you’re usually the two-wheel type.

On Thursday, riders will meet up in Battery Park at 10 a.m. and travel up the West Side into Central Park for a ride around the six-and-a-half-mile loop. (I hope they have strong legs because there’s a hill in the loop that’s a killer.)

Friday will be Brooklyn Unicycle Day and include a mass ride over the Brooklyn Bridge, across Brooklyn to Coney Island.

The action will take place on Governor’s Island over the weekend. Here’s where you’ll find all the races, sports, and competitions. Professionals will wow the crowd with their skills and everyone will have the opportunity to try their hand at one-wheeling.

And all of it is free! Before boning up on your balancing skills, head here for the particulars.
