“Dance is the hidden language of the soul of the body.”
The Battery Dance Festival has been ongoing since 1982, so in a city with no shortage of culture, it holds the title of our longest-running free dance festival. Dancers and choreographers present original works to the audience from August 13th through 18th.
Diversity is key for this festival. Of course, there will be local companies, like the Martha Graham School and Maxine Steinman & Dancers, a troupe which collaborates with other artists, such as sculptors and videographers. And Wilder Project, an award-winning dance film company founded by siblings Holly and Duncan Wilder.
But there will be plenty of representation of international dance as well. The Cia. Elías Aguirre company hails from Madrid. Danuka Ariyawansa and Behri Drums & Dance Ensemble come all the way from Sri Lanka; the Mophato Dance Theatre will bring us a taste of Botswana.
In addition, the organizers have placed a focus on Indian dance, inviting six companies to perform from as far away as Bangalore and as close as New Jersey!
Plus for all you wannabees, there will be instruction on a segment of the choreography post-performance!
Shows take place from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park in Battery Park City. Click here for a calendar of performances.
